In 2024, my mission at Tradeblock was to accelerate our efforts in creating the ultimate sneaker marketplace. As a designer, I led the charge in shipping numerous impactful features, each aimed at alleviating our users' biggest pain points around buying, selling, and trading sneakers online. Below, I share highlights from some exciting growth experiments I conducted across our mobile and web platforms, each providing valuable insights into scaling a dynamic marketplace.
Offer Ideas: Create compelling offers in seconds
'Offer Ideas' streamlines the offer creation process by leveraging our extensive history of successful trades and cash premiums. Users just pick the shoes they want, and it generates hundreds of compelling offer suggestions with a single click.
The Offer ideas feature is integrated into our regular flow, enabling users to experiment with it a test its effectiveness.
By leveraging two years' worth of successful transaction data, we wanted to help users create high-quality offers quickly without overthinking different shoe combinations and the ideal amount of cash to add.
Evolving Tradeblock into a full-fledged, dynamic auction marketplace
I expanded Tradeblock's capabilities to introduce an auction marketplace, allowing users not only to trade but also to buy and sell their sneakers. This strategic shift positioned Tradeblock to compete directly with industry giants and accelerate growth - making us the ultimate go-to destination for any sneakerhead.
Users can now effortlessly list their shoes for sale, place bids on other collectors' items.
This flow empowers users to discover sneakers, access detailed product information, and make informed bids. With real-time market insights available at the click of a button, users can confidently place competitive bids, enhancing their chances of securing the perfect pair.
If a shoe is available listed for sale, users can directly buy or bid a lower amount to close the deal.
With this experiment, we wanted to evaluate two versions of the product details page: one with all buy/sell/trade actions consolidated & another split into 'I want it' & 'I have it' sections with corresponding Bid & Ask actions.
After conducting multiple one-on-one conversations with collectors, it became clear that most rarely make direct purchases; instead, they prefer to negotiate aggressively to secure the best possible price.
Activating new users through the Bounty Program
To drive user activation, we launched the Bounty Program, giving experienced traders exclusive access to new users and their offers through a new experience. This initiative not only incentivized seasoned traders with a $15 fee discount for successful trades but also facilitated smoother transactions for newcomers, as they traded with trusted sneaker collectors on the platform.
We gamified the experience with a leaderboard, motivating participants to trade their way to the top for cash rewards.
Traders with < 25 trades can quickly complete transactions to unlock exclusive access to the Bounty Program.
The goal of this program was to ensure that new users have a seamless first trading experience, encouraging them to return. To achieve this, it was essential to have our top users drive the initiative.
Seller Dashboard: Streamlining how collectors manage their listings
Seller dashboard minimizes friction for users with large closets by allowing them to quickly upload their inventory using a simple CSV file. This feature enables resellers to effortlessly update prices, ensuring their asks remain competitive by continuously monitoring the lowest price for each SKU on the platform.
Seller dashboard offers unmatched convenience, giving users with large closets a powerful advantage not found on any other marketplace.
Collectors will experience a significant reduction in the time and effort needed to manage their inventory, leading to faster listing updates and more competitive asks.
